About ASDA Fuel

Asda has been retailing fuel since 1967, two years after the company’s formation. The name Asda is a combination of Peter Asquith and Associated Dairies. The Asda petrol station in Halifax was the first discount petrol station. Since the early 1990s, Asda, like many other supermarket fuel retailers, have supplied their own fuel, delivered by their own branded tankers. Asda started out with forecourts inside its supermarket car parks, but in 2012 they boldly tried a standalone station based in Sale, Greater Manchester.

Asda has been through several ownership changes. In 1999 Asda joined the Walmart family and became part of the world’s biggest retailer.

In October 2020, the Euro Group’s Issa Brothers and TDR Capital announced they had agreed with Walmart to acquire a majority stake in Asda, with Walmart retaining an equity interest in the business. Further expansion came in August 2022 when the Co-op agreed to sell its 129-strong petrol forecourt business to Asda in a deal worth £600m.

Before the Co-op purchase, Asda operated just over 330 locations and had a market share of just over 7.5%.
