Why do fuel prices vary?
Across the country, there are many things that affect fuel prices. Aside from the base wholesale price, regional variations all affect fuel prices. From overhead costs of a station to demand and how quickly the station gets through a tank.
For example, a station that has high thoroughfare will be able to react to price drops and raises quicker as they bought it more recently. This can play against them sometimes as the prices will rise more steeply at stations like this, unlike a smaller forecourt.
A more remote station will also be more likely to have higher prices, especially when it is far away from a refinery or pipeline outlet, simply due to transportation costs.
Crude oil prices have a huge effect on the price we pay at the pump, and so any global disruption, such as Trump’s sanctions on Iran play a huge part in the price we pay at the pump.

I bought unleaded at Tesco in Melton Mowbray today and paid 119.9
It is £123.9 in Burnley Lancs. today
Always the cheapest there….Pay £1.26 for diesel….Peterborough £1.35
Where in Peterborough.for diesel
it is 133.p at my Morrisons in Greenock for Diesel
Paid 121.9 for diesel at Costco on Tuesday!
£121.9 at Costco just seen £134.9 at Esso Winterbourne, Bristol!
£154.9 at BP Stensham Services on M5 for diesel. I don’t buy fuel on the motorway but my tank was almost empty. I wonder if I had an electric car would the AA come & charge my battery?
£1.23 unleaded at Asda in Farnworth today.
I paid £126.9 last Thursday at my local Tesco outlet and yesterday they had put it up to £127.9.
I was under the impression that fuel prices had come down, how wrong could I have been!!
Have used the station in Atherstone before. Seems there is a nice battle between the stations on the A5 south of Tamworth. Also used stations in Kettering but these don’t seem so competitive now.
I got unleaded at Sainsbury Waterlooville today for £121.9 per litre.
Paid £1.22 for Unleaded at Morrisons Milton Keynes
How on earth can petrol be the cheapest on the Isle of Wight?
Would love to know…. Subsidised?
no we are not subsidised on the ise of wight.we have a very few petrol stations here..super markets are always having a price war here
Supermarkets are in competition on the IOW.
they still have lower priced fuel in the tanks, due to less sales than the mainland, generally they are slower to raise and lower prices.
As mentioned there are no other supermarkets within 6 miles. It’s always busy day times, and open 24 hours. Newport IOW there are 3 supermarkets within a mile, so easier to choose. I find those cheapest for diesel. I believe there is a pipe from Fawley refinery too.
Could it have anything to do with Isle of Wight Fuels, a private company who have their own fuel storage depot and fuel barge and that the Esso refinery at Fawley, near Southampton, is the largest in the UK and one of the most complex in Europe.
“A more remote station will also be more likely to have higher prices, especially when it is far away from a refinery or pipeline outlet, simply due to transportation costs.”
Really?. If that was true, why is Broadford (on the Isle of Skye) 8p cheaper than my local petrol station in Central Scotland? Skye is a LONG way from Grangemouth.
The reason is that the Scottish Islands benefit from a 5p Rural Fuel Rebate
I paid 119.9 in Sainsburys in Bexhill on sea on Sunday
Why don’t more places sell lpg for cars
There are a lot of LPG outlets in the Midlands but some places , like Norfolk have few. Check https://www.filllpg.co.uk/index.php?page=lpg.php
Paid £1-31 p today at Morrison m’ borough for diesel, daylight robbery.
morrisons are always daylight robbery. Vast difference in small area – Ripon, Boroughbridge and Knaresborough. excuse at ripon is ” it costs more to deliver petrol to us” really???? liars No great mileage between all 3 places but big difference in price
£133. 30 at Morrisons Poole, Redruth
That has to be the worst mate!
Go and shoplift some food as they do not seam to be insured about this ??? Why
Its 1.32 for unleaded in Dorking Surrey.Total rip off.
In mid Northumberland, the petrol is £1.32. Yet go 20 miles down the road to the nearest town and it’s 5p cheaper. I ask why???
Greed Jenn. Plain old greed.
Bought unleaded Petrol at Sainsburys yesterday @£124.9 & along the road Esso stations selling @£128.9
I think there is a lot of profiteering going on. Nobody seems to question the escalation in prices!
So the cheapest place to buy diesel in the Country is in Shildon and Hawes, both miles and miles away from oil refineries. This just goes to prove that the fuel retailers are ripping off the motorist big time. It’s time that we united as a Nation, and arranged mass protests by boycotting certain brands for a set period of time. Let’s start with BP who are the biggest rip off merchants of the lot. If everyone boycotted a certain brand for one week, the others would soon fall into line, fearing that they’d be next.
£119.9 for unleaded in Sainsburys Bishop Auckland. less than a mile from Shildon!
I agree BP are a rip off,10 miles south of norwich on the A11 there 2 garages opposite each other 1 is Shell the other BP diesel £149.9 Shell is always 1 penny cheaper, yet on the bypass at Thetford on the same road ther’e both BP opopersite each other they are @£130.9 but drive less than 2 miles sainburys is just £127.9. I thought BP was british petrol ium so we are getting ripped off by are own govermemt just so they get more tax off us mive one. Vote Brexit party .
.BP was sold off years ago (maybe 20).
BP is own by American companies
That alone should be reason enough not to buy from BP.
I never buy BP anyway, they are always the most expensive in my area.
I agree with you completely ,Grangemouth on my doorstep Ineos refinery was Bp . Prices here are always above the norm . Targeting Bp one week Shell the next Esso ect week in week out would soon bring down prices .this should also be done withSupermarkets Colin Waterhouse
Unleaded at Tesco Self Service in Wokingham today is 119.9
just paid 1.29 unleaded in Maidenhead
Your figures are incorrect! Asda in Tamworth easily figure in the top ten for Unleaded. If you can’t get it right, don’t bother. If there is a reason you don’t include particular outlets then say so. Not impressed!
What is the price at Asda in Tamworth ??
120.7 unleaded
£1.28 unleaded, Tesco midford road Bath Somerset
With the 10p off I paid 1.16 at Sainsbury’s Purley way Croydon
Its now 1.19 here and we did not have to spend £60 to get a discount! at Sainsbury’s
4 days ago it was priced at £115.9 and had been for months. LOL
£1.28 unleaded, Tesco, Midford Road Bath, Somerset
Diesel £1.30.7 at Park Royal London, Asda.
I paid 1.655 euros for diesel in France 2 days ago
127.9 in Camborne today
I live in Tunbridge Wells * have a Sainsbury & Esso within 250 yards & 30 yards. The current price of unleaded petrol is £1.29 per litre . The cheapest is normally an esso garage out in the sticks which is normally 2 p a litre cheaper!
So much for Sainsbury’s claims of competitive prices. Just filled up in Epsom Sainsbury forecourt for petrol and paid £1.279 p/l.: way above lowest prices.
Maxadolf, try ASDA Burgh Heath instead – 126.7
You need to spend £60 in store Dr Maxadolf for £0.10 off.
I presume at these prices you are a Doctor or Lawyer or petrol forecourt sole owner!!!
Diesel 133.9p/litre in Tesco Stratford-upon-Avon this morning.
That is huge!!!
Sorry.
£1.29 diesel in Broadford Skye Coop.
If Shildon in County Durham is £1.279 Why does it not show on your map and why does Price and distance make no difference when we apply for the options and why is there so much lag on the site? It takes ages to get a result. Your daily email, Alerts are a joke.
P.S. The new design is great but the rest is bull sh*t., compared to before! What have you done?
Paid £111:9 at Leicester Costco on Monday for unleaded.
Always seems reasonable in Keighley
Local BP station used to be “affectionately” known as Dick Turpin’s. Highest prices in the area. It was demolished and an M&S BP outlet built in its place. This is now “affectionately “ known as New Dick Turpin’s. Highest prices in the area. Reason for this statement is that its amazing how many people seem disinterested in shopping around which I always do. Nearest “reasonable” price is only two miles away and is currently 132.9 for diesel.
Bought diesel at Asda in Aberdare Saturday it was £130.07
How come i live near 2 refinery s opposite is a garage just happens to be bp and is the most expensive in the area alone with another garage that also happens to be bp rhats is about 4 mile away i find this discusting ots about time we took a stand again oil companys but we all need to stand together in stead of sittonf on our backsides and whatching the price rocket other countrys wouldnt stand for it i say just barracade ALL refinerys nation wide watch there proffits drop then but we need to see it through till they drop the price to a realistic price
Pettol prices
08/05 Huddersfield Tesco Unleaded, £1.239
At tesco in Poole – which has long been our cheapest local outlet (East Dorset), unleaded was £126.99 today. I see Brent crude has dropped to $69: so we are being royally ripped off!
Try ASDA on Canford heath , Henry! Nearly always 0.2p less , currently 1.2p less for diesel. 131.7p versus 132.9p
In Surrey diesel is 1.34 per ltr
My local BP petrol station had a make over some time ago including the main price indicator board where you would normally expect to see the current prices as you drove by. It has not shown any information since it was installed. The only way to find out what their current prices are is to drive in and ask, or drive up to an island, look at the prices, and possibly think better of it and drive away!
Prices in Glastonbury, Street and Wells, Somerset are very high and without doubt price fixing (agreements) between the super markets are in place.
The price difference between Sainsbury’s in Street and Frome is normally between 5 – 7p/litre. Frome is cheaper because they have to compete with the local Asda store
Peter Meese, if you think traders are operating a cartel (price fixing), report them to your Trading Standards Office (probably at the county Council). The practice is ILLEGAL but getting sufficient proof that is fit for a court prosecution is difficult..
P.S. Diesel from my local ASDA in Leicester was £1.297/litre last weekend. Other retailers are more distant and more expensive…
Hi which Asda – Fosse Park?
I paid £1.21.9 at Sainsbury in Grimsby today
155.9 last Friday Reading services (BP)eastbound. Thought it was ultra diesel at first it wasn’t, just the cheap stuff!
Tesco diesel Rugeley Staffordshire cheapest for miles.
£128.9. Amazing compared to Tesco in Lichfield 131.9.
You can guess where I fill up at least 3 times a week.
Debbie
Last Sunday I was in Lake district and when petrolprices app showed that the cheapest fuel is 120.7 in Lancaster… it thought to myself it must be some old price…. but NO. In Lancaster Asda it was indeed 120.7… sadly I have small tank 🙁
Interesting spread of location’s for the cheapest prices; not one of the twenty listed is in, or anywhere near, the southwest of the UK. I’d like to see a top ten most expensive locations list for diesel and petrol, I’ll bet we’d feature then!
Our local charge is 128.9 at the moment, leapt up by 3p in 2 weeks – North Lincs. Yet in East Yorkshire it’s 121.9 – why?????
Diesel is €0.95 in Tenerife, and the sun is shining.
Join the discussion…Cost you five tanks-full to bring it back to the UK
Ferrybridge services £151.9 when Asda was £114.7 some time ago How much now I wonder
123.9 at Morrison’s, Stevenston yesterday. Asda, Ardrossan was 124.7. Asda are normally cheapest but not on this occasion.
Diesel is 156.9 at Gonerby Moor Services, A1 near Grantham.
Same brand is 18p cheaper in town.
Bring back the old app. New app doesn’t work right will not keep information about postcode, distance. Or fuel. App tells me 121.9 but when you checkout the garage it’s 138.9 in Scotland.
